NetEase's upcoming urban open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been officially renamed Ananta. First unveiled at Gamescom 2023, the game recently released a new trailer, promising further details on December 5th. Until then, you can view the teaser below:
The Meaning Behind the Name Change
While the developers haven't commented on the name change, "Ananta" translates to "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of the original name, "Mugen." The Chinese title also supports this interpretation. The gaming community is divided on the change, but generally relieved the project continues.
Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually impressive, it lacks gameplay footage, giving Neverness to Everness a potential advantage for some players. However, Ananta's visual style is considered more appealing by others.
A Curious Development
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all prior social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only their Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This unexpected move has left many fans puzzled.
Ananta casts players as an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator battling paranormal threats. Notable characters include Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For detailed gameplay information, visit the official website.
