Baldur's Gate 3 Studio Pivots to New Project

by Alexis Feb 25,2025

Larian Studios, following the phenomenal success of Baldur's Gate 3, is now fully dedicated to its next project. While limited post-launch support continues for BG3, including the upcoming Patch 8 with new features, the studio's primary focus has shifted.

Before BG3's late 2023 release, Larian was already a CRPG giant, known for the Divinity: Original Sin series. This established reputation and the success of BG3 – a game that garnered numerous Game of the Year awards and attracted a wider audience to the CRPG genre – has significantly elevated Larian's profile and generated considerable anticipation for their next endeavor.

In a statement, Larian confirmed their complete concentration on their next title, initiating a temporary media blackout to maintain focus. While Patch 8 will introduce additional features to Baldur's Gate 3, further significant support seems unlikely.

Larian's next project remains largely shrouded in mystery. Although a new studio was opened in mid-2024 to aid in the development of two ambitious RPGs, the current status of this plan is unclear. Speculation ranges from a Divinity: Original Sin 3 to an entirely new IP, leveraging the experience gained from Baldur's Gate 3.

The future of the Baldur's Gate franchise is equally uncertain. Wizards of the Coast faces the challenge of finding a new developer to meet the high standards set by Larian's work. However, the positive news is that several BG3 actors have expressed interest in reprising their roles in future installments, regardless of the studio involved.
