CES 2025: Top Gaming Monitor Trends

by Dylan Mar 12,2025

CES 2025 showcased a plethora of new gaming monitors, pushing the boundaries of display technology. QD-OLED remains a dominant force, with major brands like MSI, Gigabyte, and LG unveiling impressive 4K 240Hz and even 1440p 500Hz models (like the MSI MPG 272QR QD-OLED X50). Advanced burn-in protection features, such as Asus's Neo Proximity Sensor (featured in the ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM and ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDPG), are also emerging. While initial pricing remains high, prices are expected to decrease as the technology matures.

Mini-LED, though less prominent, persists as a viable alternative. MSI's MPG 274URDFW E16M, with its 1,152 local dimming zones and 1,000 nits peak brightness, aims to offer a more affordable option to QD-OLED, boasting 4K 160Hz and an optional 1080p 320Hz mode. While its AI-driven dual-mode functionality is questionable, its high brightness and lack of burn-in risk make it a compelling prospect.

The race for higher refresh rates and resolutions continues unabated. 4K 240Hz is now a reality, joined by 1440p 500Hz displays like the Gigabyte Aorus FO27Q5P (VESA TrueBlack 500 certified) and the previously mentioned MSI MPG 272QR QD-OLED X50. MSI even resurrected TN panels with the MPG 242R X60N, boasting an astonishing 600Hz refresh rate, albeit at the cost of color accuracy and viewing angles. 5K monitors are also gaining traction, with Acer's Predator XB323QX (5K, 144Hz with G-Sync Pulsar) and LG's pair of 5K2K ultrawide monitors (45GX950A and 45GX990A, the latter featuring a bendable display) leading the charge. Asus even showcased a 6K mini-LED ProArt Display 6K PA32QCV aimed at creators.

Smart monitors are blurring the lines between TVs and gaming monitors. While the Samsung G80SD had mixed reviews, the trend continues with offerings like HP's OMEN 32x Smart Gaming Monitor (32-inch 4K with streaming apps and multi-platform streaming), LG's ultrawide UltraGear 39GX90SA, and Samsung's M9 Smart Monitor (4K OLED with neural processing for upscaling and a 165Hz refresh rate).

In conclusion, CES 2025 highlighted a significant leap forward in gaming monitor technology, offering a diverse range of options catering to various needs and budgets. The year promises even more exciting developments in this rapidly evolving field.
