Sid Meier's Civilization VII ushers in a new era for the iconic turn-based strategy series, launching across major gaming platforms. This guide clarifies the game's cross-play and cross-progression features.
Cross-Play:
Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. An active 2K account is required, linked across chosen platforms. Cross-play functions seamlessly between PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, offering standard map sizes and player counts.
However, incorporating Nintendo Switch players introduces restrictions. The Switch version has limitations on map size (cannot support standard or larger maps) and player counts (up to four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, six in the Modern Age). Therefore, cross-play sessions involving a Switch will adhere to these reduced parameters. While playable on Switch, these limitations should be considered, especially in online multiplayer.
Cross-Progression:
Unlike the nuanced cross-play, Civilization VII's cross-progression is straightforward. With an active 2K account, progress is synchronized across all linked platforms. This means players can seamlessly continue their game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or other linked platforms without restarting. This feature, absent in Civilization VI at launch, is a key improvement in Civilization VII, reflecting modern gaming preferences. Whether playing on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress is consistently tracked.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
