Sports Interactive and Sega have announced the cancellation of Football Manager 25 across all platforms. This marks the first time the long-running series has skipped a year since its inception in 2004.
The developer had touted FM25 as a significant technical and visual leap, aiming for a "generational advancement" by transitioning to the Unity game engine. However, the transition proved challenging, particularly impacting the player experience and user interface.
The cancellation, revealed alongside Sega Sammy Holdings' financial results (which include a writedown of related costs), followed "extensive internal discussion." Sega has confirmed that no job losses are associated with this decision.
Sports Interactive stated that there will be no FM24 update with 2024/25 season data, prioritizing resources for FM26. Discussions are underway with platform holders and licensors regarding extending FM24 agreements on subscription services like Game Pass.
FM25 faced two prior delays before its ultimate cancellation (originally slated for March 2025). The development team is now fully focused on Football Manager 26, anticipated for its usual November release window. Refunds are being offered to those who pre-ordered FM25.
The developer acknowledged the disappointment this news will cause, particularly given the delays and anticipation. They explained that the decision was made after extensive internal testing revealed the game didn't meet their quality standards, specifically regarding the core player experience and interface. Releasing a subpar game, or delaying further into the football season, were deemed unacceptable options.
The statement emphasized the commitment to delivering a high-quality product and assured fans that all efforts are now concentrated on ensuring FM26 meets expectations. Further updates on FM26's progress will be provided in due course.
