The beasts you encounter in *Monster Hunter Wilds* are all ferocious and memorable in their own way. Rompopolo stands out as one of the most unique monsters in the game. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you defeat and capture this Brute Wyvern.
How to Unlock Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
Rompopolo, a Brute Wyvern-type monster, is first encountered in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. You'll meet it in the Oilwell Basin region on your journey to Azuz City. Defeating Rompopolo is necessary to progress further in the game.
Once you've defeated Rompopolo at least once, its entry will appear in your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage it repeatedly by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.
How to Beat and Capture Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
To prepare effectively for this battle, equip your hunter with water-element weapons, which can be obtained from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, gear up with fire-resistant equipment, which you can also farm from Uth Duna (initially, the belt and greaves) or from Ajarakan later in the chapter.
Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general defense charm like Defense Charm I. Before the fight, don't forget to grill a meal to boost your health and stamina.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses
Rompopolo's unique physiology includes saggy skin that inflates with gas, which it uses for gas-related attacks that can cause explosions. It can also inflict poison status ailments, so carry Antidotes. Your Palico can help cleanse most ailments as well.
Key attacks to watch out for include:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo uses its clawed arms to swipe forward twice. This attack has limited range and is easy to dodge.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward while raising both arms for an arcing swipe attack.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail at its target.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – Rompopolo either sprays a stream of poison gas or charges forward while swinging its head, spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing eruptions. Dodge these to avoid damage.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge this to minimize damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?
As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture it, weaken the monster until your Palico notes that it looks "tired." Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out and complete the capture.
Both capturing and killing Rompopolo yield viable rewards, though the item drops vary slightly. Some items are exclusive to captures, while others require a kill. Below are the potential item drops from Rompopolo:
