HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, in its upcoming Harry Potter series.
While Variety reports Lithgow is nearing a deal, HBO remains tight-lipped, refusing to confirm the casting. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the Dumbledore role. An HBO spokesperson stated, "We understand the considerable interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation. During pre-production, we will only confirm casting details upon finalizing agreements."
Lithgow's extensive acting credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown.
Despite numerous reports suggesting progress, the Harry Potter series casting remains largely undisclosed. HBO is actively seeking actors for the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, while Paapa Essiedu has reportedly been cast as Severus Snape.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films, a decision perhaps influenced by J.K. Rowling's reported "significant involvement" in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the adaptation aims to deliver a more comprehensive and detailed narrative than the films allowed, remaining faithful to the source material. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones veteran) are attached to direct and write.
