Nintendo Switch 2: New Charger Needed?
Reports suggest the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 may require a more powerful charger than its predecessor. While the console's design appears largely similar to the original Switch, based on recent leaks, its power demands differ. An official reveal is anticipated by March 2025.
Rumors circulating online point to a crucial incompatibility: the Switch 2 may not work optimally with the original Switch's charging cable. Numerous leaks and unconfirmed reports have surfaced regarding Nintendo's next-generation console, expected to launch before March 2025. Despite the anticipation, Nintendo has remained largely silent.
Despite the official silence, leaked images continue to emerge, offering glimpses of the upcoming console. Holiday season leaks showed a device bearing a strong resemblance to the original Switch, suggesting a refined iteration rather than a radical redesign. Subsequent leaks showcased the Switch 2's magnetic Joy-Con controllers, seemingly confirming their connection method in tablet mode.
Recently, journalist Laura Kate Dale shared a picture of the Switch 2's charging dock, sourced from a purportedly reliable BlueSky contact (via VGC). This leak further suggests the Switch 2 will ship with a 60W power adapter, implying incompatibility with the original Switch's lower-wattage charger. While charging with the older cable might be possible, it's likely to be inefficient, making a 60W cable the recommended option.
Original Switch Charger: Potentially Incompatible
Numerous other rumors about the Switch 2 have surfaced. Earlier leaks detailed development kits distributed to game developers, hinting at potential titles such as a new Mario Kart and Monolith Soft's Project X Zone. Speculation regarding hardware suggests graphical capabilities comparable to the PlayStation 4 Pro, although some sources claim it might be slightly less powerful.
While the Switch 2 will include its own charger, the incompatibility with the original Switch's cable is a noteworthy detail. Gamers who misplace their Switch 2 charger should avoid using the original Switch cable as a substitute, assuming the latest reports are accurate.
