Pokémon TCG Journey Together: A Nostalgic Return for Trainer's Pokémon Fans

by Benjamin Apr 22,2025

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet — Journey Together is set to launch on March 28, 2025, and it's bringing back a beloved mechanic from 2004: Trainer's Pokémon. Fans of the classic sets like EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua will be thrilled to see this nostalgic feature return. This set is packed with excitement, and I'm eager to share a sneak peek.

Journey Together focuses on four iconic Trainers: N, Iono, Lillie, and Hop, each accompanied by their unique Pokémon ex cards that highlight their strong bonds with their teams. Whether you're looking to build a deck centered around N's Zoroark ex, Lillie's Clefairy ex, or Iono's Bellibolt ex, this set offers plenty of opportunities to explore these dynamics.

My Journey Together Product Openings

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

This set boasts over 180 cards, including more than 40 Trainer's Pokémon, 16 Pokémon ex, 11 Illustration Rares, six Special Illustration Rares, and three Hyper Rare gold cards. Additionally, the set brings back Box Toppers with Enhanced Booster Display Boxes featuring a stamped N's Reshiram Illustration Rare.

Journey Together Standard Booster Box

Opening a Booster Box is an exhilarating experience. With 36 packs, the thrill of each pull is unmatched. My highlights included N's Reshiram Illustration Rare, Iono's Bellibolt ex Secret Rare, and a Hyper Rare Spiky Energy. Even beyond the big hits, I pulled numerous solid ex cards that will enhance my decks.

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

Unfortunately, I didn't pull the highly sought-after Hop's Zacian ex or Lillie's Clefairy ex Special Art Rare, but that's the nature of Booster Boxes—no guarantees, just plenty of chances. If you enjoy opening packs and want to boost your collection significantly, a Booster Box is the way to go. It was definitely worth it for me.

Journey Together Elite Trainer Box

Elite Trainer Boxes offer a premium experience. The N's Zorua promo card immediately caught my attention, and the box itself is perfect for storing cards. The included sleeves, dice, and condition markers are great for players, and with nine booster packs, there's still room for exciting pulls.

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

Despite having fewer packs, I still managed to pull Iono's Kilowattrel Illustration Rare, Articuno Illustration Rare, and Veluza ex. These fun cards made the opening worthwhile. While ETBs may not offer the same volume of hits as a Booster Box, the structured, all-in-one product is a great way to experience Journey Together.

Journey Together Build & Battle Box

Build & Battle Boxes provide a unique experience. The main attraction is the prebuilt 40-card deck, allowing you to dive straight into gameplay. I pulled Hop's Snorlax as my promo, a fantastic card that boosts all of Hop's Pokémon attacks by 30 damage, making it essential for decks featuring his lineup.

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

The four packs didn't disappoint, yielding Mamoswine ex and Swinub Illustration Rare, which perfectly complemented my deck's theme. Although you won't get as many rare pulls as with a Booster Box, the Build & Battle Box is ideal for quickly starting to play with the new set. With four different promo cards available, I'm already tempted to buy another box to see what I get next.

Our Pokémon TCG: Journey Together Pulls

I opened 49 booster packs across all products and pulled 18 rare cards. Some were exactly what I hoped for, while others were delightful surprises. Trainers can expect to pull more rare cards than in previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions. Here's what I got:

Hop's Snorlax (Promo 184)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A robust Basic Pokémon with 150 HP that enhances all of Hop's Pokémon attacks by 30 damage. While Dynamic Press deals significant damage, the 80 recoil damage is a drawback. Nonetheless, its ability makes it a valuable addition to any Hop-themed deck.

N's Zorua (Promo 189)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A charming card that primarily serves as an evolution into Zoroark ex. With 70 HP and 20 damage from Scratch, it's not particularly standout, but it sets the stage for more powerful evolutions.

Spiky Energy Hyper Rare (190/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

This card is a must-have for my decks. It deals 20 damage every time the attached Pokémon is hit, offering both offensive and defensive advantages while providing Colorless Energy. A true game-changer.

Iono's Bellibolt ex-Secret Rare (172/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A formidable 280 HP Lightning-type Pokémon with Energy acceleration capabilities. Its Electric Streamer ability allows unlimited Lightning Energy attachments to Iono's Pokémon, making it a powerhouse for Lightning decks. Thunderous Bolt hits for 230 damage, though it requires skipping a turn.

Iris's Fighting Spirit Full Art (180/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

This Supporter card offers a strategic draw mechanism, allowing you to discard one card and draw until you have six. It's particularly useful in decks that benefit from discarding Energy or Pokémon, and the full art design adds to its appeal.

Iono's Kilowattrel Illustration Rare (163/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Lightning-type support Pokémon that replenishes your hand with its Flashing Draw ability, albeit requiring the discard of a Lightning Energy. Mach Bolt's 70 damage is moderate, but its primary value lies in hand advantage.

N's Reshiram Illustration Rare (167/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A 130 HP Dragon-type that grows more dangerous with damage. Powerful Rage can deliver significant hits, while Virtuous Flame deals 170 damage at a higher Energy cost. Ideal for players who enjoy high-risk, high-reward strategies.

Articuno Illustration Rare (161/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Water-type setup Pokémon that accelerates two Basic Water Energy onto itself with Frigid Fluttering. Ice Blast deals 110 damage, making it a solid starter for Water decks.

Swinub Illustration Rare (165/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

This adorable card is invaluable early-game, with Call for Family allowing you to search for two Basic Pokémon. Lunge Out's 10 damage is minimal, but Swinub's real strength lies in setup.

Salamence ex Secret Rare (177/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A 320 HP Dragon-type powerhouse capable of widespread damage and powerful attacks. Wide Blast hits every Benched Pokémon for 50 damage, while Dragon Impact slams for 300 damage, requiring the discard of two Energy.

Hop's Zacian ex (111/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Steel-type legendary with a potent 240-damage attack. Brave Slash can't be used consecutively, necessitating a switching strategy. Insta-Strike spreads minor damage, but Zacian is designed for one-hit knockouts.

Alcremie ex (075/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Psychic-type support Pokémon that heals 30 damage each turn with Confectionary Gift. Whipped Shot delivers 160 damage, but its true value is in sustaining control decks.

Mimikyu ex (069/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A tricky Pokémon that spreads damage with Mischievous Hands, placing three damage counters on two of your opponent's Pokémon. Ghostly Trip deals 120 damage and Confuses the Active Pokémon, disrupting your opponent's strategy.

Veluza ex (043/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Water-type glass cannon capable of dealing 240 damage by discarding your entire hand with Purging Strike. Razor Fin's 30 damage is negligible, making this card a high-risk, high-reward choice.

Lillie's Clefairy ex (056/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Psychic-type that targets Dragon decks with its Fairy Zone ability, making them weak to Psychic. Full Moon Rondo scales damage based on both players' Bench size, positioning it as a potential late-game sweeper.

Volcanion ex (031/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A Fire-type bruiser that burns the opponent's Active Pokémon with Scalding Steam. Scorching Cyclone deals 160 damage and can move an Energy to a Benched Pokémon, enhancing its versatility.

Mamoswine ex (079/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

A 340 HP tank that can search your deck for any Pokémon with Mammoth Hauler. Rumbling March starts at 180 damage and scales up with more Stage 2 Pokémon on your Bench, making it a formidable force in evolution-heavy decks.

Salamence ex (114/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.

Another pull of Salamence ex, and I'm thrilled. It offers the same devastating power with Wide Blast for spreading damage and Dragon Impact for a massive 300 damage hit, perfect for players who love hard-hitting Pokémon.
