In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring is a viable option. This guide outlines the process.
Hotwiring isn't difficult; it's often a matter of a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist. While not requiring a top-tier Project Zomboid character build, these requirements are crucial:
Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring allows vehicle operation as long as fuel and condition permit, even without the correct keys. You need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Vehicle:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
After meeting the prerequisites, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel is not guaranteed, so acquiring gasoline is advisable.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills:
For non-Burglars, skill progression requires in-game activities:
- Electrical: Disassemble electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves also provide skill boosts. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command (check in-game syntax) to directly award skill XP. Appropriate tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are necessary for disassembly/installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to remove them.
