Mobile gaming's innovative game design is truly remarkable. The unique, buttonless nature of smartphones, coupled with their widespread use, has propelled video games in unexpected directions. Roia is a prime example.
This innovative puzzle-adventure game is the latest from Emoak, the indie studio behind successful titles like Paper Climb, Machinaero, and the award-winning Lyxo.
Roia's core concept is surprisingly simple: create a river. Starting from a mountain peak, you guide the water's flow to the sea by shaping the terrain with your finger.Emoak's press release reveals the game's personal significance for designer Tobias Sturn. His childhood memories of playing in a creek with his grandfather heavily influenced the game's creation. Sadly, Sturn's grandfather passed away during development, making Roia a poignant tribute.
Roia defies easy categorization. While it presents challenges, its primary focus is relaxation. The journey takes players through diverse hand-crafted environments—forests, meadows, villages—guided by a helpful white bird.
The game's visuals echo the elegant minimalism of Monument Valley. However, Roia also boasts a captivating soundtrack composed by Johannes Johannson, who previously worked on Emoak's Lyxo.
Roia is available now on the Google Play Store and App Store for $2.99.
