Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many beloved titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's captivating adventures. This collection, featuring two games following Trials & Tribulations, masterfully builds upon previous storylines. The sequel significantly enhances the original, creating a satisfying whole. Finally experiencing the second game officially localized in English is a true delight.
The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flair. The pacing differs slightly from the main Ace Attorney games, occasionally leading to lengthy cases, but overall, fans of the series will find this sub-series highly enjoyable. If the first game feels slow, persevere; the second is far superior and adds crucial context to the first.
Bonus features rival those of the Apollo Justice collection. A gallery showcases art and music, a story mode allows for relaxed playthroughs, and players can choose between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialogue history feature, a must-have for such games, is also included.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection presents a compelling contrast between its two games. The official localization of the sequel is fantastic, and the added extras make this a truly excellent package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on the Switch. If you've already enjoyed the series, this is a must-have addition.

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome development. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels push players to their limits, although an easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience.
The protagonist, Yumetaro, utilizes his star attack in familiar ways – as a weapon, vehicle, and puzzle solver. Collectibles, offering customization options, reward players for tackling difficult optional sections. While a quick playthrough is possible, the game presents a significant challenge. Generous checkpoints mitigate frustration, although expect frequent, often spectacular, deaths. The charming visuals and lively music help maintain a positive tone, but don't underestimate the difficulty.
Gimmick! 2 is a surprisingly excellent sequel, skillfully building upon the original without losing its unique identity. Fans of the first game will be thrilled, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned: this game is just as tough as its predecessor, even on the easier difficulty.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, this change largely works, though the Switch's hardware struggles at times to deliver optimal performance. This isn't a deal-breaker, however. The intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals still deliver a satisfying experience.
The weapon system adds an engaging layer of strategy. Managing the main gun's energy, utilizing the melee weapon to recharge it, and strategically employing the rotating third weapon keeps gameplay dynamic. Mastering the rhythm of weapon management and dodging enemy fire is crucial and rewarding.
While different from the first game, Valfaris: Mecha Therion maintains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids many genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version remains enjoyable.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
Licensed games often cater primarily to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It delivers ample fan service, particularly in its writing and meta-systems. However, its appeal to non-fans is limited. The few mini-games offered are repetitive, and the storyline will resonate primarily with those familiar with the Umamusume universe.
Even for fans, the game's focus may feel misplaced. While the presentation is strong, the lack of depth and variety will likely lead to burnout. The unlockable mini-game is a highlight, but overall, the experience feels too short-lived.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit titles previously unavailable in English. The package includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. Each game features save states, rewind, display options, and an art gallery. The full localization of all three games is a remarkable achievement.
The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations is challenging due to its awkward weapon mechanics, while Ripple Island provides a solid adventure experience. The Wing of Madoola is the most ambitious but also the most inconsistent. While not top-tier NES games, they offer unique charm and historical significance.
This collection is a must-have for Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts. The careful handling of each game and the long-awaited English localization make this a valuable addition to any library.
