A Retrospective Look at Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Games on the Nintendo Switch
This article takes a unique approach to reviewing retro games available on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other consoles with a plethora of direct ports, the Switch's GBA and DS library is more limited. Therefore, this list focuses on titles available on the Switch eShop, excluding those found within the Nintendo Switch Online app. We've compiled ten favorites: four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS games. No specific ranking is implied.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration offers a solid experience. A worthwhile play for comparison, it presents a more streamlined gameplay loop. Steel Empire is enjoyable even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action game, while possessing some initial rough edges, marks the beginning of an excellent series. The later installments refine the formula, but the first game serves as the perfect entry point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry is justified due to the distinct gameplay differences between Zero and Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While the series' later installments saw diminishing returns, the original offers substantial enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection contains several worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is undeniably addictive. The unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance its appeal.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title established Shantae's popularity, leading to appearances on subsequent consoles. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptionally strong, though later installments also garner praise.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, players utilize their abilities to save others and uncover the truth behind their own death. This captivating game deserves recognition for its well-crafted narrative and inventive gameplay.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
Considered one of the best Nintendo DS games, The World Ends With You is ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch-based controls. All three titles within the collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
While the Etrian Odyssey series is intrinsically linked to the DS/3DS, this HD adaptation is a successful port. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, offers a substantial RPG experience.
