Sony's PC gaming policy sparks controversy. The company's requirement for PSN tethering, even in single-player titles, and the service's limited regional availability, restricts sales of recent releases, angering many gamers.
Sony recently announced policy adjustments. While PSN tethering for PC remains, certain relaxations have been implemented. These games will not require mandatory PSN tethering:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players opting for PSN tethering will receive these bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Black Bear armor set, the first "Lost Things" chest, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements, emphasizing their importance for security and order. While he framed the restrictions in terms of service-based games, he offered no explanation as to how single-player titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök benefit from mandatory PSN account linkage.
Times have changed, and this policy continues to be debated.
