Zenless Zone Zero Voice Actors Say They Found Out They Were Replaced When the Patch Notes Went Live

by Elijah Mar 22,2025

Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and the industry's struggle with generative AI. While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, predates the strike's July 25, 2024 commencement and isn't officially affected, the actors chose not to sign new contracts, prioritizing solidarity with striking union members and the fight for AI protections.

Chase explained on Bluesky that while the project wasn't technically "struck," it lacked the union-enforced AI rights they're fighting for. Many actors are voluntarily withholding work from such projects to support the union's efforts. Chase hoped HoYoverse would wait for her return, but the role was recast. Thurkettle, a non-union member, expressed similar shock, highlighting the existential threat AI poses to voice actors and affirming his decision to prioritize AI protections. HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.

This isn't an isolated incident. Activision confirmed recasting some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 voice actors after fans noticed changes in the Zombies mode. Zeke Alton (William Peck) and Julie Nathanson (Samantha Maxis) were replaced, with Alton expressing concern about the lack of credit for the replacement actors potentially misrepresenting his abilities.
