VNeID: Vietnam's Electronic Identification and Authentication Application
The VNeID application, developed by Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security's National Population Data Center, leverages population data for secure digital identification and authentication. Designed for Vietnamese residents and visitors, VNeID offers a digital alternative to physical documents, streamlining various processes within a digital government framework.
Key functionalities include citizen identification, access to digital services, and simplified medical and travel declarations. Crucially, VNeID assisted authorities in COVID-19 contact tracing and timely notifications.
Application Access Permissions: Using VNeID requires granting the app access to:
- Internet Access: For data communication.
- Camera Access: To scan CCCD (Citizen Identification Card) QR codes for faster data entry and quick travel/medical declarations.
- Media Access (Photos, Videos, Audio, Files): To store QR code images for verification at checkpoints.
- Notification Access: To receive alerts and updates.
Personal Information Collection: Users voluntarily provide information – including name, phone number, citizen ID, gender, birthdate, address, nationality, health status, travel details, and COVID-19 exposure information – through in-app forms. This data is collected solely with user consent and is used for public health purposes. Users are responsible for the accuracy and legality of the information they provide.
Privacy and Data Protection: The Ministry of Public Security's National Population Data Center securely stores and protects user data. This information is strictly used for COVID-19 prevention and control, public health initiatives, and is never used for commercial purposes or to violate user privacy. Data sharing may occur with relevant health and government authorities to enhance COVID-19 prevention efforts. No other uses of user data are permitted.
Important Privacy Notes:
- No Location Tracking: VNeID does not collect location data.
- Anonymity: Community participation is anonymous. Only authorized authorities can access information regarding confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases for contact tracing purposes.
