How the Game Works
Kahoot! Algebra by DragonBox covers key algebraic concepts such as addition, division, and multiplication. Recommended for children aged five and up, the game offers young learners the opportunity to become familiar with the basics of equation solving in a playful and colorful environment.
The game employs a novel pedagogical method based on discovery and experimentation. Players learn how to solve equations by manipulating cards and trying to isolate the DragonBox on one side of the game board. This process gradually teaches them the operations needed to isolate X on one side of an equation. As they progress, the cards are replaced with numbers and variables, revealing the addition, division, and multiplication operators they've been mastering.
Playing the game requires no supervision, though parents can help children transfer the skills they acquire to solving equations on paper. It's an excellent way for parents to engage with their kids and even refresh their own math skills.
Developed by former math teacher Jean-Baptiste Huynh, DragonBox has been recognized as an outstanding example of game-based learning. It has been the focus of an extensive research project by the Center For Game Science at the University of Washington.
