Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility is "always there," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This remastered collection, featuring six classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, offers a renewed opportunity to introduce a wider audience to characters like Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon – original characters largely absent from recent iterations, save for minor cameos.
Matsumoto emphasized that fan interest is key. He suggested that a strong showing of support for these characters could lead to their inclusion in future titles like Street Fighter 6 or other fighting games beyond the Versus series. He highlighted that re-releasing these classic games not only introduces the characters to a new generation but also expands Capcom's creative pool.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been a long time coming, with Matsumoto noting that Capcom had been in discussions with Marvel for several years to make the collection a reality. He also expressed Capcom's desire to re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms, acknowledging the challenges of collaboration and scheduling.
Matsumoto's comments suggest a potential future for these iconic characters, contingent on fan enthusiasm. The release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is seen as a crucial step in gauging that interest and potentially paving the way for their triumphant return.
