Composer Jack Wall explains his absence from Mass Effect 3's soundtrack. Wall, celebrated for his work on the first two Mass Effect games, particularly the acclaimed soundtrack of Mass Effect 2 (including the iconic "Suicide Mission"), did not return for the third installment. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he attributed his departure to a disagreement with then-Mass Effect development lead, Casey Hudson.
Wall stated that Hudson was dissatisfied with his work on Mass Effect 2, despite its critical and fan acclaim, including a BAFTA nomination. While he remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the falling out, he described it as a "tough time" but a relatively isolated incident in his career.
He offered further context, detailing the immense pressure and challenges involved in completing the Mass Effect 2 soundtrack, particularly the "Suicide Mission" sequence. He described the process as the most demanding project of his career, highlighting the lack of support due to BioWare's intense focus on finishing the game. Despite the difficulties, he expressed pride in the final product, considering it one of the best game endings ever created.
Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, recently contributing to Black Ops 6. BioWare, currently developing the next Mass Effect title after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has yet to reveal the composer for the upcoming game.
