LocalThunk, the creator of the wildly successful indie game Balatro, has declared Animal Well his 2024 Game of the Year. This accolade, playfully dubbed the "Golden Thunk" award, highlights the captivating gameplay and unique style of Animal Well, calling it a "true masterpiece" by its solo developer, Billy Basso.
Balatro, a deck-building game released in February 2024, achieved phenomenal success, selling over 3.5 million copies and earning critical acclaim. 2024 proved to be a banner year for indie games, with titles like Neva, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and UFO 50 also gaining significant popularity. Animal Well, however, stood out, even rivaling Balatro's critical reception. Basso, in response to LocalThunk's praise, affectionately referred to him as a "Nicest Most Humble Dev." This exchange underscores the positive camaraderie within the indie game development community.
Beyond Animal Well, LocalThunk shared his appreciation for several other 2024 indie favorites, including Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, Arco, Nova Drift, Ballionaire, and Mouthwashing. He highlighted specific aspects of each game that resonated with him. Interestingly, Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers shares similarities with Balatro, being a pixel art deck-builder created by a solo developer.
Despite Balatro's impressive success, LocalThunk continues to support the game with free updates. Three "Friends of Jimbo" updates have already introduced crossover content from popular titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, and Dave the Diver. He's even hinted at a future collaboration with another 2024 hit game.
