Pokémon TCG: Trade Token Gift, Controversial Feature Unresolved

by Ava Mar 13,2025

Pokémon TCG Pocket developer, Creatures Inc., has issued 1,000 Trade Tokens to players. This is enough for only two significant trades, a temporary measure while they continue to address concerns surrounding the recently implemented trading mechanic.

Players will find these tokens in their Gift menu upon logging in. While no in-game message accompanies the gift, Creatures Inc. took to X/Twitter to acknowledge player feedback and express their appreciation for patience. The developer's previous introduction of the trading feature was met with significant criticism, with many describing the system as "hilariously toxic," "predatory," and "downright greedy."

The trading mechanic, like other aspects of Pokémon TCG Pocket, incorporates restrictions that limit pack openings, Wonder Picking, and now trading, unless players spend real money. The high cost of acquiring Trade Tokens—requiring the deletion of five cards to trade one of the same rarity—was a major point of contention.

A week after the controversial launch, despite previous assurances that player feedback would be considered, Creatures Inc. acknowledged that certain restrictions hinder casual enjoyment of the trading feature. The developer promised to address these issues by offering necessary items as rewards in future events. However, the recent Cresselia ex Drop Event (released February 3rd) failed to deliver on this promise.

Many players believe the trading system is designed to boost revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which reportedly generated $200 million in its first month—before trading was even available. This suspicion is fueled by the inability to trade cards of 2-Star rarity or higher. The inability to easily trade for rarer cards incentivizes players to spend money on packs, as evidenced by a player's reported $1,500 expenditure to complete just the first set, with the third set arriving only three months later.
