Stray Kite Studios Unveils "Wartorn," a Real-Time Strategy Roguelite

Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based developer boasting veterans from renowned studios like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced its debut original title: Wartorn. This real-time strategy roguelite, slated for Steam and Epic Games Store early access release in Spring 2025, promises a unique blend of tactical combat, challenging moral choices, and dynamic, physics-driven environmental destruction.

Wartorn follows the journey of two elven sisters striving to reunite with their family in a fractured, war-torn fantasy world. The game’s narrative focuses on themes of purpose, sacrifice, and the enduring power of familial bonds amidst chaos. Co-founder and Creative Director Paul Hellquist states, "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us."

Dynamic Gameplay and Moral Dilemmas

The roguelite elements are central to Wartorn's experience. Players will face unpredictable encounters shaped by destructible environments and a flexible magic system. Combining fire, water, and lightning, players can strategically exploit environmental hazards, creating unique combat scenarios in each playthrough. Beyond combat, players will confront difficult moral choices, influencing the narrative and impacting subsequent runs. Decisions such as choosing who to save or feed will directly affect the story's progression.

Accessible Depth and Painterly Aesthetics

Wartorn aims for accessibility without compromising depth. A slow-motion feature allows for precise command input during intense battles. The game's painterly art style enhances the dramatic narrative, creating a visually captivating experience. Progress carries over between runs, allowing players to strategically upgrade their capabilities and improve their chances of success with each attempt.

Key Features:

  • Real-time strategy roguelite: Combines the best of both genres.
  • Physics-based destruction: Dynamic environments impact gameplay.
  • Meaningful choices: Moral decisions shape the narrative.
  • Flexible magic system: Combine elements for strategic advantage.
  • Painterly art style: Visually stunning fantasy world.
  • Progressive upgrades: Carry over progress between runs.
  • Accessible gameplay: Slow-motion feature for precise control.

Wartorn is set to launch in early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
