Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development scene, despite previous retirement plans. His latest endeavor aims to create a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.
A New Game Inspired by Final Fantasy VI
Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially released in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed his intention to develop a new title. While he initially planned for Fantasian to be his final project, the positive experience working with his team prompted a change of heart. In an interview with The Verge, he expressed his desire to create a game that serves as a successor to Final Fantasy VI, describing it as "part two of my farewell note."
The new project will be a collaboration with the same team behind Fantasian, aiming to blend classic elements with innovative ideas. The game's development is underway, with Sakaguchi stating in a 2024 Famitsu interview that he anticipates completion within approximately two years. A trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker in June 2024 fueled speculation about a potential sequel, although this remains unconfirmed.
The Fantasian Neo Dimension Collaboration and Future Plans
The recent partnership with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) marked a significant milestone. Sakaguchi reflected on this collaboration, highlighting the "fascinating experience" of returning to Square Enix, where his career began. Despite this reunion, he remains focused on his new project and has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise or his past works.
Sakaguchi's illustrious career spans decades, from directing the original Final Fantasy to producing several subsequent titles before founding Mistwalker in 2003. His new project promises a continuation of his legacy within the fantasy RPG genre, while also marking a definitive end to his creative journey.
