Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses Development on Debut Title
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its first game project. The studio, established in 2022, is actively seeking a new publishing partner to help realize its vision for a next-generation narrative-driven action game.
NetEase, a prominent global video game publisher, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's success, including the recent announcement of its Season 1 Battle Pass, and the upcoming addition of the Fantastic Four, highlights NetEase's commitment to its existing projects.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the team's ambition to create "something truly new and exciting." While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook indicated that the team will be assisting its members in finding new opportunities in the coming weeks. This mirrors a similar situation with GPTRACK50 Studios, another NetEase-backed studio founded by a veteran game developer.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, Hook's previous employer. Following criticism of Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the Paramount+ series, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and a shift to Unreal Engine suggests a renewed focus on future Halo titles.
While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain, the studio's dedication to innovation is evident. The search for a new publishing partner marks a significant step, and the industry awaits the next chapter in this ambitious project.
