Director Andy Muschietti Provides Update on Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti (known for It and The Flash) recently offered an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. The project, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, has been in development for over a decade, with game director Fumito Ueda involved in the production. While Josh Trank was initially attached, scheduling conflicts led to Muschietti taking the helm.
The announcement comes amidst Sony's recent reveal of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
Muschietti confirmed on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso that the Shadow of the Colossus film is not abandoned. He acknowledged the extended development time, attributing it to factors beyond creative desires, specifically citing the challenges of balancing the project's budget with the IP's popularity and scale. He also mentioned the existence of multiple scripts, with one currently favored.
While other games, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 (2024), have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, Sony's original remains a beloved classic. Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," called the game a "masterpiece" and confirmed multiple playthroughs. He's working to translate Ueda's vision—a vision further echoed by Ueda's own currently untitled sci-fi game announced at The Game Awards 2024—onto the big screen, aiming to resonate with existing fans while captivating new audiences. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues, with hopes for a successful live-action adaptation.
