Star Wars Outlaws Draws Inspiration from Samurai Media, Just Like the Films

Star Wars Outlaws: A Galactic Adventure Inspired by Samurai and Open-World Classics

Star Wars Outlaws' creative director, Julian Gerighty, recently revealed key inspirations behind the game's development, drawing parallels to acclaimed titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. This blend of influences aims to deliver a unique open-world experience within the Star Wars universe.

Ghost of Tsushima: A Masterclass in Immersion

Gerighty cited Ghost of Tsushima as a major influence, praising its immersive world-building and cohesive gameplay. Unlike games relying on repetitive tasks, Ghost of Tsushima's seamless integration of story, world, and characters resonated deeply. This commitment to immersion served as a blueprint for Star Wars Outlaws, aiming to transport players into the outlaw lifestyle of a galaxy far, far away. The goal is to create a captivating narrative where players genuinely feel like they are living the Star Wars scoundrel fantasy.

Learning from Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Scope and Exploration

Assassin's Creed Odyssey's vast explorable world and RPG elements also played a significant role. Gerighty admired the freedom and scale of Odyssey's world, inspiring a similarly expansive environment in Star Wars Outlaws. He even consulted directly with the Odyssey team, leveraging their expertise in managing world size and traversal distances to ensure a balanced and engaging experience. However, unlike Odyssey's extensive playtime, Outlaws will offer a more focused, narrative-driven adventure.

Embracing the Outlaw Fantasy: A Scoundrel's Journey

The core concept of Star Wars Outlaws centers on the classic Star Wars scoundrel archetype, reminiscent of Han Solo. Gerighty emphasizes the appeal of being a rogue in a galaxy brimming with adventure. This focus informs every aspect of the game, from cantina Sabacc games to spacefaring adventures, ensuring a seamless transition between activities and reinforcing the feeling of living the outlaw life within the Star Wars universe. The game aims to provide a richly detailed and immersive experience, allowing players to fully embody the spirit of a galactic outlaw.
