Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a key element in fostering community interaction and emergent gameplay in previous titles, will be absent. Players will not be able to leave messages for one another, impacting the collaborative and humorous aspects often associated with the series.
Preserving Asynchronous Features
Despite the omission of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, providing even more detail on player deaths and allowing players to loot the ghosts of fallen opponents. This demonstrates a commitment to maintaining community interaction through other means.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
The removal of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a more intense, multiplayer-focused, and streamlined experience. The game's three-day structure is also part of this design philosophy, aiming for a "compressed RPG" with minimal downtime and maximum variety.
Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
